Contour Golf gives you one contractor for building or remodeling a golf course, from site appraisal and bulk earthworks through shaping, drainage, irrigation and seeding. Established in 1993, it works across the United Kingdom, Ireland and mainland Europe. What sets it apart is soil recovery, where imported inert soil can help pay for new holes or a practice facility.
Funding a course or range with imported soil
If you have land to reshape, the company explains that inert soil reused in an approved leisure scheme is not subject to landfill tax, and that a permitted site can charge licensed hauliers a royalty to deposit it, offsetting the cost of your upgrade. With its partners, Contour carries out a pre-application site appraisal and handles planning and Environment Agency approval. At Horsham it built The Oaks, an 18-hole, 6,111-yard course designed by Sparks and Myers, and The Firs, a 9-hole par 3, finishing in 2014 after a scheme that brought in over 550,000 cubic meters of soil from 2010. The 160-acre site gained USGA greens, irrigation to every tee, green and approach, three new lakes, drainage to all playing surfaces, and maintenance roads and golf cart paths.
Driving range builds on a tight timeline
The Leicester Golf Centre job at Oadby shows what a fast range build involves. With no income until the range opened, Contour had a five-month window to shape, cultivate and seed it, while also building two new greens and tees with drainage and irrigation, a short game course and a putting green. The range opened for play at the start of October, and new sand then went into all 18 of the course’s bunkers as part of a full bunker renovation.
Its own machinery and finishing methods
Because Contour owns and maintains all its golf plant, you avoid the delays that come from waiting on hired machines. According to its website, the fleet is worth more than £2m and includes CAT dozers and excavators with V-PAT blades and Power-Tilt hitches, John Deere tractors, Toro bunker bikes, and Blec finishing tools and seeders, all on low ground pressure tracks or tires. Its USGA greens use a 300mm sand rootzone over a 50mm choker layer and a 100mm gravel carpet, and subsoil drains for greens, tees, bunkers and fairways go in with laser and GPS guidance. The company can run your grow-in in full or advise your greenkeeper through it.
Architects it builds for
As a golf course construction and renovation contractor, Contour lists past work with Jeff Howes at Fota Island, Weller Designs, Christy O’Connor Jnr., Jonathan Gaunt, Ken Moodie and Roger Jones. Our guide on how to choose a golf course architect and builder covers what to ask before you sign.
