MJ Abbott gives golf clubs and resorts one in-house contractor for building or remodeling a course and for the water systems behind it, from shaping, greens, tees and bunkers to drainage, irrigation, pump stations and reservoirs. Working from Dinton near Salisbury, it takes on projects across the United Kingdom, Ireland and Western Europe, and it runs a trade counter selling pipe, irrigation parts and golf sands. Its own history lists course work for two Ryder Cups, the Brabazon Course at The Belfry in 2001 and the Twenty Ten Course at Celtic Manor in 2010.

New courses, renovation and practice areas

If you are planning golf course construction, its golf team handles anything from rebuilding a single bunker or green to an 18-hole course on a greenfield site, plus bunker lining and SubAir subsurface aeration systems. Among construction and renovation contractors, it publishes a Royal Norwich Golf Club build with 24 USGA greens and tees, a 40,000 m³ irrigation reservoir and a new practice tee and driving range, opened in 2019. For irrigation and drainage, you get system design, installation by its own crews, controls with weather stations and smartphone access, pump stations built in-house, reservoir construction and maintenance contracts after handover. Published irrigation work includes a Rain Bird system at Royal Liverpool, Hoylake, a Toro system at Royal Portrush, and what the company describes as the UK’s largest irrigation pump station, for St Andrews Links Trust.

Materials from the Dinton yard

Your greenkeeping team can also buy from its yard, which holds land drainage pipe, PE pipe and fittings, irrigation products, pumps, channel drainage and ducting for immediate collection, and the company says it carries the largest stocks of water pipe and Plasson fittings in the south of England. It also sells bunker and top-dressing sands, rootzones and topsoils, delivered to sites across mainland UK. The MJ Abbott Direct web shop lists turf and sports sprinklers with data sheets and saved order templates, so repeat parts for course equipment and maintenance can be reordered online.

Background

Founded in 1965 as an agricultural contractor, the business moved into sports turf drainage in the 1980s and into golf in the early 1990s. In 1995 it finished the PGA Course at The Belfry after the main contractor became insolvent. It now employs over 150 people, builds specialist machinery in its own workshops and bought Premier Pitches in 2022.
