If you run a golf club, develop a course or design one, you get one contractor that can build a new course from layout to grow-in or renovate an existing one. SOL Golf is based in Ballydesmond, County Cork, in Ireland, and its site says it works across Europe, the Middle East and beyond.

A new course built from layout to grow-in

For new golf course construction, the company offers all-inclusive projects, from layout and planting through drainage and irrigation to final preparation, seeding, turf harvesting and grow-in.

Renovation that keeps your course in play

On renovations it lists drainage and turf upgrades, infrastructure updates and reworked features. The company says it aims to keep disruption low and hand the course back to your club on schedule. Its in-house drainage crew also offers sand slitting and top dressing on new and established courses.

Course work you can hire it for

Its published service list runs to more than 30 items, including:

• Bunker construction, lining and revetting, useful if you are comparing bunker renovation contractors
• Land drainage systems, vertical drainage, irrigation and sand and gravel banding
• Ponds, lakes, reservoirs and lake lining
• Coastal erosion work and dune stabilization
• Golf cart paths, maintenance paths, bridges, roadways, stone walls and sleeper walls with steps
• Driving ranges, maintenance facilities, GPS and surveying
• Hydroseeding, sprigging, large-scale turf laying and tree planting

Courses and designers it has worked with

At Hogs Head in Waterville, County Kerry, designed by Robert Trent Jones II, SOL Golf built a new 18-hole course with practice facilities, a full irrigation system, 45 km of drainage and a sand cap across all areas. Work began in January 2016, the course was seeded by September 2016 and it opened for play in July 2017.

With European Golf Design it built Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, finished in September 2020 and later host of the 2023 Ryder Cup. It renovated the entire green complex and the fairway bunkering at Golf Club Crans-sur-Sierre in Switzerland. Other projects shown include Costa Terra in Portugal and Discovery Dunes in Dubai for Fazio Golf Design, Taymouth Castle in Scotland, St Andrews Links, Carnoustie, Ballybunion, Baltray and Les Bordes.

Who runs the company

Founder Michael O’Leary came from farming and started in golf construction in 1996 on the new course at Killarney Golf Club, setting up the firm in 1998. Paul O’Mahony became a partner in 2022 after roles at Old Head Golf Links and Quinta do Lago, and the company says he works with both cool-season and warm-season grasses.
