If you run a private club, own a course or are developing one, you get a single firm for a new course or a redesign of your layout, one that says it can stay involved from early concept planning through to construction. Kipp Schulties Golf Design, Inc. is a golf course architecture practice in Tequesta, Florida, led by architect Kipp Schulties.
New courses and redesigns you can commission
The firm offers two main services, new course construction and course redesign. According to its website, its staff covers golf course design, engineering, finance, project management, construction and real estate under one roof, so you deal with a single company on each part of a project. You can also call on Kipp’s own listed services:
- Site analysis and feasibility studies
- Financial analysis for golf facility projects
- Contract negotiation and administration
- Project management during construction
If your project needs funding, the firm says Kipp has working relationships with lenders and private capital groups that fund golf facility development. If you are comparing design and build options, find more firms under golf course construction and design, and our guide on how to choose a golf course architect and builder covers the selection process.
Where you can see the firm’s work
You can check its published portfolio, which lists 68 courses, most of them in South and Southwest Florida, with others in North Carolina, Pennsylvania and California.
Mizner Country Club in Delray Beach was fully redesigned by the firm as an 18 hole, par 72 private course with TifEagle greens. At Admirals Cove in Jupiter, the Golf Village course, made up of three 9 hole courses, was redesigned in 2015 using 130,000 cubic yards of fill. Other named work includes Wycliffe Golf & Country Club (East) in Wellington, Island Country Club on Marco Island, Stonebridge Country Club in Naples and The Quail Golf Club in Carmel, California.
What you can expect from a renovation
The firm describes a redesign planned around what your members and managers tell it. The contact page states that Kipp is usually on site at least two days a week while a course is under construction, with daily contact between everyone on the project.
The work starts with the business case. Kipp establishes with the owner or members whether the course serves a private, public, resort or real estate market and which golfers play it most. He then interviews and surveys the membership and club management on what they like and want changed, hole by hole across the whole course.
The architect you would work with
The firm says Kipp holds an MBA in finance, played to a near scratch handicap and still works with the Fred Couples design team. He began as an intern and rose to lead designer while working with architect Gene Bates and PGA Tour players Fred Couples and Johnny Miller, spending more than seven years with Bates and Couples.
Other course architects listed here include Bergin Golf Designs, one of several golf suppliers in the United States, as well as Mackenzie & Ebert and Clayton, DeVries & Pont.
