If your club is planning a new course or wants to restore or renovate an existing one, you get a design team that says it currently has clients in Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas. Clayton, DeVries & Pont (CDP) is a golf course architecture partnership with an office in St James’s, London, and a team it describes as spread across six countries on three continents.
Restoration and renovation for your existing course
If your club has a Golden Age layout, CDP says it has restored a number of them and that each has since risen in peer rankings. Its project list includes Royal Dublin, Royal Hague, The Addington in Surrey, Utrecht ‘De Pan’, Hamburger Falkenstein, Le Touquet La Mer, Lake Karrinyup and The Lakes in Australia, and US clubs including Bloomfield Hills, Siwanoy, Meadow Club, Pelham and Sunningdale Country Club in Scarsdale. Partner Hendrik Hilgert is also working with Royal Dublin and Royal Belfast, the two oldest clubs in Ireland. When you compare golf course construction and design firms, you can ask CDP for its full client list and references, which it offers on request.
New course design you can commission
According to its website, the team has designed new courses in the United States, Europe and Australia over roughly 25 years. Published examples include:
- Barnbougle Dunes, Seven Mile Beach and Cape Wickham Links in Tasmania
- Kingsley Club and Greywalls in Michigan
- De Swinkelsche in Someren and The Links Valley in Ermelo, the Netherlands
- Royal Queensland in Brisbane
The partners and associates you work with
Mike Clayton played the Australasian Tour from 1981 to 2007 and the European Tour from 1982 to 2000, and his Royal Queensland course is due to host the golf events of the 2032 Olympic Games. Mike DeVries, who holds a Master’s in Landscape Architecture from the University of Michigan, works hands-on in construction and designed Kingsley Club in Michigan and Cape Wickham Links in Tasmania. Frank Pont, a Delft-trained civil engineer, founded his own practice in 2003 and works with more than thirty Colt, Simpson and Pennink courses in Europe. Hilgert leads work in Germany and Spain and a team designing four new courses in Vietnam. Associates cover Australia, the USA, Great Britain and Ireland, and Iberia, including MacKenzie historian Josh Pettit in San Francisco and tour winner Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano. The firm presents itself as modeled on historic design partnerships such as Colt, Alison & Morrison.
