Barenbrug UK is a grass seed breeder and producer based near Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, supplying seed mixtures for golf courses, bowling greens and other sports turf alongside agriculture, landscaping and home lawns. It is listed here under fertilizer, seed and sod within golf course equipment and maintenance, and among golf suppliers in the United Kingdom. The business was established in the UK in 1983 and belongs to the Barenbrug Group, which has its headquarters in the Netherlands and, according to its website, 18 operating companies and 22 research and development locations.
Golf seed mixtures
The golf range runs to 13 products, each matched to a part of the course:
- All Bent, a blend of three browntop bentgrass cultivars for greens, including BarKing, which the company says has strong Microdochium (Fusarium) tolerance
- Classic 80:20, an 80% fescue and 20% bent mixture for seeding new greens
- Fescue, an even split of slender creeping and Chewings red fescue for greens, tees and fairways, suggested for free-draining sandy links greens
- Shoreline, a slender creeping red fescue blend containing Barnoustie and Barpearl for salt-affected coastal courses
- Open Rough for outer and fringing roughs, with optional specialist grasses for a bespoke mix
- SGT Fine Fescue, SGT All Hard (three hard fescues for overseeding fairways) and SGT Rye Fairway, which features the Barprium cultivar
- Ultrafine 30 and Ultrafine 60, which combine Ultrafine perennial ryegrass with red fescues for greens, tees and fairways
Seed technologies and turf advice
Several products carry named technologies. SGT is aimed at turf under high stress with lower water, fertilizer and chemical inputs. RPR is a regenerating perennial ryegrass, SOS is an overseeding option the company says germinates at temperatures down to 3.5°C, and Ultrafine is a fine-leaf ryegrass line for close mowing. The website also publishes grass disease factfiles and articles on hard fescue for fairways and on overseeding Poa annua greens with browntop bent, and it has announced two newer fescue varieties, Barnoustie and Barquess.
Production and how golf clubs buy
