You get sprayers, greensrollers, fairway rollers, aerators, sweepers and turf vacuums built for golf courses, athletic fields and park and recreation grounds. Smithco is a US manufacturer of turf maintenance machinery for golf course equipment and maintenance, one of the golf suppliers in the United States listed here, with an office in Wayne, Pennsylvania, and customer service run from Cameron, Wisconsin, and Humboldt, Kansas.
Turf machinery you can order for your course
You can choose from five current product families, and the company also names bunker rakes, infield groomers and vacuums on its About page.
- Spray Star sprayers, current models 1110, 1200 D (diesel) and 1300, with booms in 15, 18 and 20 ft widths. If you run a tight, hilly course, the 1110 is described as the lightest model for that ground and carries a 110 gallon tank.
- Tournament Ultra greensrollers, the Ultra Lite 7576, Ultra 7090 and Ultra XL 7020. Smithco says its greensrollers have been used at the Ryder Cup, PGA Championships and U.S. Opens.
- Ultra 10 and Ultra 15 fairway and turf rollers, which you can fit with options such as a hitch mount, hydraulic lift, folding arms, spikers and a foamer kit.
- The Aer-8 aerator, 60 or 78 in wide, pull type or 3-point hitch mounted, weighing 1,607 lb with a 100 gallon ballast tank.
- Sweep Star sweepers and turf vacuums, the 60, 60 Quad, V62, V72 E and V72 PTO.
Spray control and aeration options you can specify
You can order sprayers with Star Command I, which uses TeeJet Radion rate control and DynaJet droplet and pressure control, or Star Command II, which uses Ag Leader InCommand 1200 with RightSpot pulse width modulation, GPS guidance and turn compensation.
On the Aer-8, you pick from four tine types to suit the job: Aer Fine for thatch control, a 0.75 by 4 in coring tine for topdressing and overseeding, the 6 in All Star for surface compaction and the 7 in Turf Quake, which fractures the soil sideways and downward. You can run it from your tow vehicle’s hydraulics or from an electric and hydraulic power pack with a remote control at the driver’s seat.
To compare these with other maintenance tools and supplies, you can download spec sheets, manuals and a catalog from its site, and a guide to buying golf course machinery covers new, used and leased options.
Where you can buy and who you deal with
You buy through dealers, which the company says are in more than 62 countries, backed by regional sales managers for the Northeast and Southeast, Southwest, Midwest and West Coast of the USA, Canada, Asia Pacific and Europe.
To compare other turf machinery makers and distributors, those listed here include Reesink Turfcare, Redexim UK, SISIS and Baroness UK.
Company history
Ted Smith founded Smithco in 1967, and its first product was the Red Ryder motorized utility vehicle for greenkeeping crews. His son Don Smith has since followed him in the business, which reports two manufacturing locations.
