If you run a golf course, STRI Group can take your project from planning and design through construction to ongoing agronomy advice and laboratory testing, all within one group. It is a design, engineering and management consultancy based at the St Ives Estate in Bingley, West Yorkshire, in the United Kingdom, and according to its website it has bases in six countries across four continents, including an office in Melbourne.
What your club can get from STRI Group
- Advice on course maintenance and greenkeeping practice from its agronomic consultancy team, which names golf courses first among the settings it covers.
- Laboratory soil testing, sports construction materials testing and turf disease diagnostics.
- In-house planning and masterplanning, ecology, water management, landscape architecture and golf course architecture.
- Construction work through Carrick Construction, launched by the group in 2018 for sports ground construction, land drainage and pitch renovation.
- SuDS and land remediation through Environmental Protection Group, acquired in 2020, and water management systems for sports surfaces and sub-bases from SWD Systems.
The group works to a plan, design, build and maintain model. Golf is one of the sectors it lists, alongside stadia, equestrian and grassroots sport.
Golf club projects you can compare with your own
The group publishes golf work covering planning, coastal erosion, water use and drainage.
- Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club, Wales: a new practice green planned for the club’s 2023 centenary. STRI handled planning, an archaeological survey and a SuDS scheme approved by the Welsh drainage approval body, with care for great crested newts recorded near the site. Full planning permission was granted.
- Tenby Golf Club, Wales: on this 18-hole coastal course, where STRI already gave agronomy advice, it agreed with Natural Resources Wales, the National Park and the planning authority to protect eroding dunes with gabion mattresses and boxes, due to be removed within an agreed 10-year period.
- The Springs Golf Club: engaged in 2020 to cut water use on the course after its purchase by Darwin Escapes.
- Cleobury Mortimer Golf Club, Shropshire: a bespoke drainage design and installation on a 27-hole parkland course, aimed at year-round play.
Greenkeeper training and a history going back to 1929
The business began in 1929 as the Board of Greenkeeping Research, set up with a £303 grant from The R&A to improve greens on British golf courses. After renaming itself the Sports Turf Research Institute in 1951, it ran week-long courses for greenkeepers and groundsmen every spring and autumn. It became STRI Ltd in 1989, added agronomy, planning, design and construction services over the following decades, and rebranded as STRI Group in 2015.
