If you run a golf course, you get bunkers built on a bonded gravel layer instead of a fabric or sprayed liner, which the company says drains at more than 2,100 inches per hour and removes the risk of liner failure, with a certified local installer to do the work. Better Billy Bunker is a bunker construction system from a company based in the Nashville, Tennessee area, listed here among golf suppliers in the United States and under both bunker renovation and golf course construction and design.
A certified local installer for your course
When you or your course staff get in touch, you are matched with a local installer. The company lists more than 65 installers in North America, covering the United States, Canada and Mexico, and more than 25 elsewhere, in countries including Australia, the UK, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and Brazil. Your installer will have had hands-on training in polymer application, the five-step process, quality control sign-off and paperwork, and sand selection, plus lifetime technical support. If you are a contractor, you can ask for technical specifications, cross-section drawings and installation documents.
Courses you can read about on its site
The method has gone in at more than 600 courses, and the company cites over 2,000 bunker installations worldwide. On its website you can read superintendents and grounds directors at Evansville Country Club in Indiana, Olde Florida Golf Club in Naples, Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey, The Loxahatchee Club in Jupiter, Florida, and London Hunt Club in Ontario describe their bunkers after heavy rain. Baltusrol reports the Lower course was done in 2020 and all 36 holes were finished for spring 2025, and Olde Florida’s bunkers went in during a 2021 renovation.
What happens at your course, in five steps
- The full bunker floor is excavated, and your existing drain tile is inspected and kept if it still works.
- Locally sourced gravel graded between 3/16 and 3/8 inch is spread 2 inches deep.
- A certified installer applies ST410 Polymer, the company’s own product, to bind the gravel into one drainage layer.
- The layer cures for 24 hours and the installer checks every square foot before any sand goes in.
- Tested and approved bunker sand is placed to the specified depth.
Where the method came from
According to its website, founder Billy Fuller worked for decades as a golf course superintendent and developed an approach called the Enhanced Bunker Drainage Method after repeated bunker drainage failures and heavy repair labor. The patented Better Billy Bunker Method was launched in 2009.
