If you want bunker edges that the company says need no water and that come with a 20 year guarantee, Durabunker builds and supplies them for golf course renovations, remodels and new builds worldwide. Durabunker Ltd is a bunker design and construction company in Bridgend, South Wales, in the United Kingdom.

Bunker edges and liners you can get for your course

You get bunker edges and faces built from stacked, recycled synthetic turf instead of natural sod. The company says the edges need no water and resist washout, burrowing animals, extreme heat and freeze thaw, and it lists a 20 year guarantee. It presents the system as a way to cut your course maintenance labor and cost and to keep your sand free of contamination. Its website says the system holds the only granted patent for a geosynthetic bunker edge and has been used on five continents, including at PGA, LPGA and European Tour venues.

You can choose single, “Double Stack” or “Triple Stack” builds. According to its history page, shapes range from rolling 6 inch lips to walls 4 m high, with flat top lines or “Golden Age” shaping, on links, parkland, moorland and heathland sites. Recent project posts pair the edge with Duracrumb, its rubber crumb bunker liner, which the company says drains fast and causes no problem if a club strikes it.

Courses that use the system

The company renovated the bunkers at Tiburón Golf Club in Naples, Florida over two summers from 2016, and built bunkers on the Jack Nicklaus Signature course at Banyon Cay Resort in 2017 while training local contractor Ryan Golf. Every bunker at Hermitage GC in Ireland was rebuilt with the system in 2020, with DAR Golf as main contractor. Its portfolio also lists Royal Lytham, Turnberry, The Belfry, Kiawah Island and Qiddiya City.

How the system began

The idea began at Maesteg Golf Club, where managing director Rhydian Lewis co-developed it. It was sold as Envirobunker from a launch at BTME in 2011, and Lewis founded Durabunker Ltd and renamed the product in 2014. Durabunker is one of the golf course construction and design firms on this site.
