David Williams Golf Design gives your club, resort or development company a golf course architect who handles the whole job, from first site appraisal and routing to planning negotiations, working drawings, tender documents and site inspection until handover. The North Wales practice works across Great Britain and Europe. It lists more than 30 new courses and over 200 completed projects, and its principal, David Williams, was the first President of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects when it formed in 2000. You will find it among the golf course architects and the wider golf course construction and design suppliers on this site, and in the United Kingdom section.

New courses priced and drawn before work starts

You get full working drawings covering levels, setting out, drainage, irrigation, services and plans and sections of every green and tee, plus a specification and bill of quantities. The practice says this lets you get competitive tenders from approved contractors and keep budget control, because nothing is left to redesign on site or to in-house shapers. It also runs the planning application, appraises tenders, administers the building contract, makes site visits weekly, fortnightly or monthly depending on the project, reports on cost changes and issues the final certificate. Maintenance advice during grow-in is included. Two of its 18 hole layouts were built in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and approved only after public inquiries.

Renovation plans your committee can follow for years

If your course has been altered piecemeal by successive committees, the practice starts with a hole by hole audit and a written report, often with a plan of each hole, then turns it into a 5, 10 or even 25 year programme. You can carry the work out in house with your greenkeeping staff over several winters, or in one winter with a contractor using its tender documents. Specific services cover tee, bunker and greens renovation, including removing bunkers that no longer come into play but still cost money to maintain. Lundin Golf Club, Basingstoke, Milford Haven and Faversham are among the clubs it has reviewed, along with Golf Club de Pedreña in Spain and Alger Golf Club in Algeria.

Projects and consultancy work

Its portfolio includes PGA Golf Catalunya with Neil Coles and Angel Gallardo, Archerfield Links in East Lothian, Caversham Heath, Merrist Wood and nine hole and par 3 courses such as Sealand Golf Centre in Chester. Consultancy clients named on its site include Visit Wales and Ryder Cup Wales, Wirral MBC near Royal Liverpool, and the Irish Revenue Commissioners. It currently oversees masterplans for three 18 hole courses on Gran Canaria. The guide to choosing a golf course architect and builder sets out what to ask before you appoint one. Other golf suppliers listed here include Mackenzie & Ebert, Clayton, DeVries & Pont and Huxley Golf.
