Kafka Granite gives you two patented golf course surfaces from a natural stone producer in Mosinee, Wisconsin: Wax Coated Pathway Mix for cart paths and walking paths, and Wax Coated Bunker Sand for bunker faces that keep washing out. Both coat crushed stone with a wax polymer, and the company says they cut the hours spent repairing erosion after heavy rain. It sells golf course maintenance materials and bunker sand to courses throughout the United States, and both products are covered by US Patents 10,675,525 and 11,420,104.
Cart paths your own crew can install
The pathway mix arrives pre-mixed, so your staff spread, level and compact it with no contractor, special equipment or water. The company says the finished surface is dustless, never turns muddy and holds on steep slopes where a stabilized mix may not. Existing sand or stone paths can be graded and compacted as the base, and asphalt can be milled in place and covered. You can replace paths in stages to spread the cost, and stockpile the mix outdoors uncovered, since it has no shelf life.
Named colors are Autumn Blend Marble, Beige Blend Marble, Platinum Granite, Rustic Granite and Twilight Black Granite, and custom colors are available. For flatter stretches at a 10% grade or less, Kafka also sells a permeable Stabilized Pathway Mix that it can match to the wax-coated blend.
Bunker sand that stays on steep faces
Kafka developed the bunker sand for out-of-play bunkers at Whistling Straits. Wax polymer encapsulates each grain, giving a firm, sealed surface that sheds water into the drains without carrying sand into them. You can place it straight over existing sand on steep faces, target bunkers, waste bunkers and out-of-play bunkers. It is not playable sand, though the company says balls will not plug in it. The Whistling Straits superintendent says Kafka matched the course’s existing sand color.
Courses using the materials
At Erin Hills in Hartford, Wisconsin, the grounds crew laid the wax-coated mix on hilly walking paths before the 2017 U.S. Open and ordered more ahead of the 2025 U.S. Women’s Open. At Glen View Club in Golf, Illinois, Autumn Blend replaced limestone screenings that washed out and made the cart paths dusty and noisy. Kafka also names Union League National, Aronimink and Eastward Ho! among the courses using its materials. Founder Glenn Kafka spoke about both products at the 2019 GCSAA Golf Industry Show, now the GCSAA Conference and Trade Show, covered in this guide to golf trade shows in 2026 and 2027.
